Tharros A short distance from Oristano lies the ancient city of Tharros, where evidence of inhabitation dates back to the 8th century BC. It was a busy trading port that sustained an economy until Roman occupancy 600 years later, who updated its streets, roads and infrastructure. The city was abandoned around 1000 AD after Byzantine occupancy and several Sacrean raids. Sand blew about its skeleton, burying it until its re-discovery in the 1900s. Roads, temples, dwellings, meeting areas, a sewage system, areas reserved for commerce and thermal spas remain as time-capsules of the past. |
