Il Candelieri, or The Festival of the Candle, is always celebrated the day after the Feast of Assumption on the Christian calander. Citizens in medieval dress carry giant wooden columns symbolising candles through the city in honour of a pledge Sassari made in 1652. The faith of the city is said to have helped deliver them from a devastating plague that had caused thousands of fatalities.
